History in the making...

There was quite a lot going on this calendar week. Monday we celebrated the work of a man who gave his life in pursuit of the promise that we were all equal. He worked and sacrificed for the belief that “God created all mankind in His image…”(Gen 1:27). And Tuesday we witnessed history as some of the fruits of that work saw America swear in our first black president. Regardless of your political leanings, it was most definitely a stirring moment and monumental in American history. It was incredible.

The event brought to mind the scripture that says “Praise be to God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them…”(Daniel 2:20-21a). Yes, we have free will on earth to do as we choose, but I like to believe that my God still holds the reigns of everything in the universe! It is my prayer that we remember God in this time of political buzz and changes. One of my least favorite things about election seasons is how quickly we seem to forget that God is still in control of this world! Man will be man, and evil will be done, but I know God hears the cries of His people!

I urge us today to pray for our nation. Pray that we will be people who return to striving for righteousness and goodness. Pray we will be a holy nation that calls on His name. Pray that we will seek peace. Pray we will make decisions in love. Pray we will hold high God’s standards. Pray we will love others. Pray we will be a light of honor and holiness.

I also urge us to pray for our new leader. Pray that he will look to God for wisdom. Pray that he will truly serve the “least of these”. Pray that he will lead with morals and honesty. Pray he will value life. Pray that He will truly be a man of God above all else.

Most of us reading this are Americans. But let us not forget that our first citizenship belongs to the kingdom of God! We serve the “King of Kings”. May our hope, faith and trust be not in man, but in Him alone.

Free Music Friday

This song is a fave of mine that many haven't heard. I find it quite inspirational. The band is a group of unheralded Aussie boys. You will hear from the soaring melodies and vocal harmonies (complete with falsettos) that they obviously appeal to my addict like love of all things brit-pop. The tune popped up on my "shuffle" several times this week, just begging me to share it with everyone. So please do enjoy. "The Guide" by Borne.

Jesus: general contractor

This week we began a small remodel at our home. We are converting our garage into a master bedroom and bathroom. If you know me at all, you may know that I am the MOST MECHANICALLY IGNORANT man alive. I can’t even build with frickin’ leggos! Just being around construction makes my palms sweat and my panic attack reflex go on high alert! :)
So, try and imagine my predicament when I went out to look at it after the 1st day of work. It was dusty and ripped apart. There were holes, ripped out walls and basically a giant mess everywhere. It looked like something in a cheesy insurance commercial. As I looked at it, my only thought was “what a disaster”. Then, “we really messed up. How will we ever fix this?” In my head, this could never be anything other than a mess. It was framed with the potential to be a beautiful room with a little work, but my brain will not work that way. I only saw a mess, hopeless and sad. But the contractor, he saw a beautiful bedroom and bathroom, perfecto live in. It was all a matter of seeing past what was right in front of us…a matter of perspective.
I fear that we often treat our souls and spiritual lives the same way. We only see the mess, and are not able to get past it. As we take a look in the mirror we see the mistakes, bad choices and sins all over the place, and can never imagine us being anything else. We cannot see all the potential that is there. But thankfully, God sees with the eyes of the contractor :)!
It is a matter of “condition vs position”. Our condition may be a sad sinner, but my position is that I am a sinner that is in Jesus Christ….the forgiver of sins and the savior of man!
Don’t let your past mistakes define who you are! Only Christ can do that. Move past what you see, to what you can be! Let God do the work that needs to be done to turn you into something beautiful!
Now, it will cost to get that garage into a livable space, but it can be done. It will cost some sweat and effort, some money and some supplies. It will also cost to change our lives! It will cost more work and time, and ultimately, it cost a life. But rejoice, because the fee has been paid!

What will you become? Will you stay dirty and dusty bound by limited vision, or will you choose to let God work, and watch His glory unfold into something new and beautiful?

Back to life....

I am sorry for my lack of blogging guys. The ol’ computers have been a little sick lately, but I hope the recent round of antibiotics is helping. ANywho….I know last year I got a little lazy and turned this into a “family picture update” only. While that is necessary and fun, I have always wanted this to be a journal of reflections and devotional thoughts as well. So, I pledge to get back to that immediately!
But first, amuse me with a few pictures from the holidays so my family can see my wonderful kiddos!

Holidays madness

So…..the holidays had me out of blogging for awhile…….it was not a season of restful peace. But, it was a good one. Leading up to Christmas saw a flurry of activity in the ministry. Our Christmas basket project this year exploded into something huge. We adopted 23 families (over 105 people!!!!) Wow!!!!!! The need, pain and hunger I found this year literally broke my heart. I am still reeling from it and trying to figure it out. I can’t believe folks just around the corner are forced to live this way….but I do pray the food, and gifts we took were able to bring a few smiles and possibly shine a tiny bit of Jesus’ life into their worlds. Here are some pics from that. (Out of respect for the families, the pics are only of the assembling…not the deliveries)

After 2 nights of assembling and delivering, we had the Children’s program at church I was leading. I recruited 2 amazing ladies this year who really put on a great evening! The family potluck and Santa visit was great too!
